Learn More About the Psychodynamic Counsellor

Welcome

My name is Karen and I am a qualified psychodynamic counsellor, working in Hertfordshire and the surrounding areas.

I came into counselling via Cruse, where I worked for many years as a bereavement counsellor. I worked with clients individually as well as supported those bereaved by suicide as a group facilitator.

Over the years I have also worked  in Her Majesty's Prison Service and with The Counselling Foundation, where I trained as a psychodynamic counsellor.  Alongside private practice I volunteer at a senior school counselling adolescents.

As a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy(BACP)) I am bound by its code of ethics and practice and I am committed to on-going professional development.

How I work

My approach with any client is to build a genuine counselling relationship of trust, whereby you feel supported, heard and enabled to explore your thoughts and feelings.  Talking to someone in confidence can be a huge relief and can help you make sense of your present day problems, as well as explore how your current difficulties might be based on past experiences and relationships.  Counselling can help allieviate your distressing emotions, gain a better understanding of yourself and help you come to terms with any difficult experiences that may have happened to you.

Over the years  I've supported clients with wide range of issues and have developed specialist interest and experience working with:

  • · Anxiety and low self esteem
  • · Depression
  • · Bereavement, loss and major life changes
  • · Stress and its impact on your life

I work with clients on an open-ended basis and also offer short-term Grief Therapy sessions, focusing primarily on the loss of a loved one. Since Covid-19, I've been supporting clients through online and telephone sessions and am experienced in providing the same level of support remotely as via face-to-face sessions.

My Background

Prior to counselling, I worked as a registered nurse for over 10 years in both NHS hospitals and residential settings before specialising as a Practice Nurse in a GP surgery. I have a broad range of experience supporting people with chronic disabilities and illness and have a continued interest working with clients who have suffered with physical traumas, pre and post birth related traumas.

If you would like to find out more about how I can help you please do not hesitate to  contact me.
